How To Replace A Nutone Bathroom Fan

A bathroom fan not only removes moisture and unwanted odors, it also reduces mold problems, warping of doors and windows, and removes the fog from the mirror. Over time, an old fan wears out; it is worth replacing it with a quieter, higher-capacity model. Choose the lowest sound rating (0.5 is almost silent, 4.0 is about as loud as a TV) you can buy. Before you begin, turn off the power at the electrical panel.

The connections on this task are simple; however, it is not easy to work on the ceiling to remove the old device. Be sure to wear gloves, long sleeves, a cap, and respiratory and eye protection – insulation drops are inevitable.

Step 1: Remove the fan mechanism

Turn off the power at the electrical panel. (Use a voltmeter to confirm that the power is off.) Remove the grid. Unplug the cord from the outlet in the box. Loosen the retaining screws, and use a pry bar to remove the fan mechanism from the case.

Step 2: Unplug the wires

Open the cover of the socket in the housing and pull out the wires. Disconnect the wires inside the case by turning the connectors counterclockwise.

Step 3: Release the case

Look for fasteners and untie them. If you can’t find any fasteners inside the case, it was probably attached from above. Usually the nails or screws are only on one side. Use a mini-hacksaw to cut them.

Step 4: Detach Wires and Vent Hose

Lower the housing, while guiding the wires out of the socket. Be prepared for an isolation stunt. Cut the wires or detach them from the wire clamp. Use a utility knife to cut and remove the tape or clamp securing the vent pipe to the housing.

Step 5: Strip the wire

Use a wire stripper to strip approximately 100 mm (4 in.) Of wire. Straighten the wires and strip approximately 12.7 mm (1/2 inches) at the ends. Avoid nicking the wires when stripping them.

Step 6: Attach a wire clamp

Insert a wire clamp into the hole provided in the housing. From inside the housing, screw the clamp ring onto the clamp and tighten.

Step 7: Insert the wire into the wire clamp

Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the retaining screws on the wire clamp. Push the wires through the wire clamp and into the housing. Push approximately 6 in. (152 mm) of wire into the housing and tighten the wire clamp.
